End the summer in the best way possible: relaxing at the beautiful beaches of OBX! There are plenty of fun events to keep you busy — from races and kite festivals to some fun, competitive water sports! Check out this list of our favorite events happening this month.
September 2
6-8 pm
Every month, join the area’s businesses, restaurants, and galleries to celebrate Manteo’s vibrant downtown. This street festival will make any new visitor fall in love with OBX’s charming coastal communities. (About a 30 minute drive)
September 4
8-9 am
Hosted by the Kitty Hawk Elementary School, this local favorite runs – pun intended – through some of the more scenic sections of the central Outer Banks. All paces welcome. (Just over 40 minutes away)
September 9-11
10 am-4 pm
Featuring professional shows and hands-on kite flying for adults and kids, the Outer Banks Kite Festival is a favorite celebration of the Outer Banks’ legacy as one of the best flying destinations in the world. (About an hour drive away)
September 16-17
Experience a true sample of what life on Hatteras Island is all about. Celebrate the history and culture of the region with fresh seafood, live demonstrations, working commercial fishing boats, live music, kids’ activities, and more. (2 hour drive from Corolla)
September 18-24
Take part in this rare opportunity to see the best surfers on the East Coast go head-to-head at this “grand finale” event that is renowned as one of the best surfing competitions on the Eastern Seaboard. (One hour from Corolla)
September 23-25
Hatteras Island Surf Fishing Challenge
This popular fishing tournament takes place all across the islands and allows anglers to pick a favorite spot, cast a line, and hopefully reel in a few big catches. Bring the whole family down to the beach, the tournament offers got Junior, Senior, and Lady angler prizes.
