Get ready to jump into the fun with a month-long calendar full of activities, events, and destinations for May 2022!

May 6

6-8 pm

First Friday in Manteo

Every month, join the area’s businesses, restaurants, and galleries to celebrate Maneto’s vibrant downtown. This street festival will make any new visitor fall in love with OBX’s charming coastal communities.

May 6 & 7

OBX Rod and Custom Festival

This festival is a special celebration of vintage and antique cars that offers a host of family-friendly activities, including local food vendors, cruise-in activities, and displays that will impress car fans of all tastes and ages. The festival is at Soundside Park, about an hour away, but if you’re a vintage car enthusiast, it’s well worth the drive.

May 7

10 am-3 pm

Artrageous Kids Art Festival

This FREE full-day affair combines fun artistic activities for the young and the young at heart with music with the friendly spirit of the Outer Banks. This is an annual tradition that began in 1989 and has become a favorite event for visitors of all ages. Held in Nags Head, it’s about 55 minutes worth of driving, but an entire day of fun.

May 10-14

Hatteras Village Offshore Open

Based in the small town of Hatteras village, this multiple-day fishing tournament attracts anglers from all across the East Coast and is one of the most anticipated fishing events of the year for folks throughout the Outer Banks, and miles beyond. All abilities welcome to participate.

May 14

OBX Shred Fest

The Dare2Care OBX Shred Fest includes multiple bands and musicians throughout the day, live demos performed by professional skateboarders and BMX riders, and special appearances by roller derby women and Special Olympics athletes. This event, like the rod and custom festival, is at Soundside Park in Nags Head.

May 19-22

Hang Gliding Spectacular

The Hang Gliding Spectacular and Air Show – renowned as the longest-running hang gliding competition in the world – is a multiple-day event that combines activities for professional hang gliders and spectators alike. If you’re interested in a serious adventure, head to Kitty Hawk Kites Hang Gliding School, less than an hour away in Kitty Hawk, NC.

May 30

Shore Break 5k and Tide Pool Fun Run

Runners will trek through picturesque Kinnakeet Shores on an informal course that includes paved roads, boardwalks, beach walkways, and a few fun but challenging steps over the dunes. All paces welcome, and all proceeds benefit the Hatteras Island Youth Education Fund (HIYEF). The event kicks off from The Froggy Dog Restaurant in Avon, NC (about an hour and 40 minutes away). The drive is beautiful – and so is the run!
